I read through the rules and have a few questions.

"You can't use any 3rd-party functionality (e.g., widgets) or example content".

Can you clarify what you guys mean by "example content"? Does this mean we shouldn't set up sample modules with dummy text? On that note, is there a certain way we should be setting up the modules on the home page or is this up to the designers? I'm assuming the default modules (i.e. the modules shown on the home page when the network is created—photos, videos, latest activity, members, blog posts, events, badge, etc.) need to be shown.

I signed up for a trial account on Typekit; however, it says the font I want to use (which is listed in the "Available Fonts" section here) is only included in the Personal plan and higher. It tells me I need to upgrade, asks me for my credit card number, and says I will be charged once I submit. Is there a way to avoid the Typekit fee for the purposes of the competition?

I'm using the developer mode to create a theme and am trying to incorporate as much of the LESS variables as I can to make it easier on the user. Given that all changes are lost once I exit developer mode, will the changes I make in the developer mode be integrated into the theme if the theme is chosen? Or should I be using the advanced css section for additional styles?

If you guys can get these cleared up for me, that'd be awesome. Thanks! :)

Hey there! You're totally free to use fake (or lorem ipsum) text, just avoid using example content that you don't have the rights to use (images would be a great example here).

Up to the designers in terms of layout placement/which feature modules are shown on the homepage, since this will be determined by the Network Creators anyway once a theme is used "in the wild." As long as the theme works/looks good visually with various modules, you're free to show whichever you'd like for your submission.

Certain Typekit fonts (while approved for contest use) are only available under paid Typekit plans. Many designers already have an existing paid Typekit plan, but if you don't, you can either sign up for one via typekit.com or stick to the approved free font options.

Re: the LESS variables, we intentionally chose live Ning Networks as the contest entry format so that you're able to make use of LESS. Once themes are approved for the Theme Marketplace, we'll assist on integrating them into the system.

Hope that helps!

Great, thanks for the help, Kyle! :)

Hey Kyle (or anyone),

This may be a dumb question but I Just wanted to be super clear on this. Are we allowed to use royalty-free images as dummy content? Obviously we can't use images that we don't have rights to but I'm wondering if royalty-free images are ok.

Hey John! Yep, you're free to incorporate any images you have the rights to use.
